With the awful seasons happening yearly now, people want a turnaround. At the moment, many see the draft as the best way to get back on track. Yes, that is pretty effective, but in order to avoid the dreaded long-term rebuild, going out into the free agent market is necessary.
The Chicago Bears have money burning in their pockets. According to many, the salary cap is estimated to be around $168 million in 2017. At that amount, the Bears will have about $58 million available. That is enough money to make major moves via free agency. That is before they make some cuts that are coming as well.
Of course, the team needs to have a balanced approach. They can’t spend all their money on free agents then leave themselves without flexibility. Also, going exclusively through the draft would require a lot of patience on all sides. After a decade of futility, patience is running thin.
