Part ways with Cutler

Jay Cutler is a lightning rod for controversy for the Chicago Bears. Ever since he came to Chicago in 2009, high emotions followed him. Fans either love him or hate him, and not many have feelings in-between.

Like some of the other Bears on the roster, Cutler has a lot of talent. He has a rocket for an arm, and he is very athletic as well. The problem is that, for whatever reason, things have not worked out for him. Yes, he’s dealt with a lot of coaches. He’s also dealt with a bad offensive line and with receivers dropping the ball.

He’s also earned a lot of criticism himself.

Cutler continues to make ill-advised passes. He depends too much on his arm, and he takes too long to run through his progressions. Also, his mechanics are out of whack. He still makes throws off his back foot, not stepping into his throws.

HIs attitude causes trouble for him as well.

Cutler is quick to lose confidence in both his coaches and his teammates. Once he loses that confidence, he shuts down. He will avoid throws to certain players (he appears to absolutely loathe throwing to Jeffery in the red zone), and won’t listen to coaches.

Fans are not the only ones to grow frustrated with Cutler. Former Bears great Brian Urlacher criticized Cutler. He said once the only thing elite about Cutler was his salary. Former teammate Bobby Wade claimed that Urlacher called Cutler a pussy. Former offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer also anonymously leaked news that the Bears grew frustrated with Cutler in 2014.

The quarterback on the team needs to be a leader. Cutler is not a leader. Speaking to Colin Cowherd recently, Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe was brutally honest. He talked about how Cutler is usually by himself. When you look at someone like Jameis Winston, for example, there are other players surrounding him. Players want to play with him. Say what you will about Winston, but he is a born leader.

Jay Cutler is older now, and it appears his body is breaking down. The Bears already paid him his guaranteed money, so cutting ties with him is easy now. It is time to say goodbye to him. At this point of time, even Cutler’s most fervent defenders must acknowledge that the time to cut ties is here.

Well, there are the five New Year’s resolutions the Chicago Bears need to make for 2017. Whatever the Bears do in the offseason, hopefully, it is the firs step to bringing a winning attitude back to Halas Hall.
