Get help in the secondary

The Chicago Bears’ secondary may be the one unit hit hardest by injuries. It’s been so bad they used undrafted rookies to START games for them.

While the defense overall did very well in terms of yardage given up, it just did not get enough turnovers. They rank dead last in the NFL in turnovers. They ranked 30th in interceptions.

Without causing turnovers, teams go on extended drives. Those drives end up in scores. Not only that, it causes the offense to have to use a long field. Turnovers give the offense a short field to play with, making it easier to score.

The long drives end up tiring the defense. Too many times, the Bears had fourth-quarter leads lost because the defense could not make the key stops.

It is important for opposing quarterbacks to know that there are areas that are dangerous for them to throw. Right now, that isn’t the case with the Bears. Quarterbacks can throw to any of the cornerbacks without fear of getting picked off.

The Bears secondary needs playmakers who can keep up with receivers and separate those receivers from the ball. They need players like Charles Tillman, who regularly caused turnovers.

The best place to get cornerback help is the draft. This year’s draft is deep at the cornerback slot. There are at least ten corners who can go in the first two rounds. A free agent pickup can help also.

It is time for the Bears secondary to strike fear into quarterbacks. They need corners who can fight with the big receivers and who are ball hawks. The play of the last four seasons is tiring, and it is time to get back to Chicago Bears football.
