The Chicago Cubs finally won the National League championship. It’s been a long 71 years since that happened, and a lot of things changed since then.

Celebrate Chicago Cubs fans, your team finally made it! The franchise finally won the National League championships and are headed to their first World Series since 1945.

I am sure when Cubs fans woke up Sunday morning they felt the world was completely different. Flowers smelled better, food tasted better and people were nicer.

Well, to be honest, things are different when it comes to the Chicago Cubs and the World Series. The last time they went there, the world was a different place.

A lot happened since 1945. Different cars, different people and different situations occurred.

Let’s take a look at some of the differences:

The sports world was very different

The last time the Chicago Cubs were in the World Series, the leagues were not how they are now.

Major League Baseball had only sixteen teams. The Los Angeles Dodgers, the team they beat to get into the World Series, were not even in Los Angeles. Back then, they were known as the Brooklyn Dodgers. The New Yorks Mets, the team that beat the Cubs last season to keep them out of the World Series, was still 12 years away from being a franchise.

More from Da Windy City

Back in 1945, baseball was still segregated. It would still be TWO years before Jackie Robinson broke MLB’s color barrier.

In the NFL, the league had just ten teams. The Super Bowl did not exist yet.

The Rams, who just moved back to Los Angeles after being in St. Louis, hadn’t even been to Los Angeles yet. They were located in Cleveland, of all places. They beat Washington to win the NFL championship.

On Tuesday, the NBA opens its season on the same night the World Series begins. Back in 1945, the league did not even exist. The first NBA game was not played until November 1, 1946.

This country was very different

Okay, how different was this country the last time the Chicago Cubs went to the World Series?

Gas prices in the United States average about $2.23 per gallon. In 1945, that average was FIFTEEN CENTS!

Today, the country seems to be at war with itself. Back in 1945, it was finishing a war that involved world nations. When the Cubs played in the World Series, World War II ended the month before.

We are in the midst of a Presidential election. When the Cubs last went to the World Series, neither Hillary Clinton (October 26, 1947) nor Donald Trump (June 14, 1946) were even alive.

When the Cubs clinched on Saturday, we could see the game from our televisions, radios, computers and smart phones. Back then, the television was just 18 years old, so not many people had one. The transistor radio had not even been invented yet.

The list is even longer when it comes to how the world looked the last time the Cubs WON the World Series (the invention of the car, the discovery of oil, the creation of the crossword puzzle, and many, many more).

Let’s just hope that someone does not have a “What happened the last time the Chicago Cubs went to the World Series in 2016” article decades from now.
