Chicago Bears must fix problems at the top before they fix roster

The Chicago Bears this season may be worse than the previous three losing seasons. Before they can fix what ails them on the field, they must know what they want to do at the top.

This is another dismal season for the Chicago Bears. After a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars this past Sunday, their record stands at 1-5 (and they almost gave up that win).

The Bears have a 20-34 since 2013. They look nothing like the Monsters of the Midway that fans are used to seeing. Their defense regularly gives up yards and points, and in close games the unit cannot make a key stop.

Their offense had one good season, but that was not the norm. This offense has trouble scoring touchdowns, which makes it very difficult to win games.

The talent level on the Chicago Bears is severely lacking.

That last part is most troubling.

In order for the franchise to return to its former glory, the powers that be need to have a cohesive plan on how to improve the roster.

That is not happening with the Chicago Bears.

More from Da Windy City

The drafts of the last few years were not kind to the Bears. Kevin White, Kyle Fuller, David Fales, Jonathan Bostic and Shea McClellin have not worked out. This year’s first round pick, Leonard Floyd, is on the same path as the others.

It appears that the people in the front office do not have a plan together. There is a disconnect between ownership, general manager, scouts and coaching staff.

With that much discord, it will be some time before we see the Bears win again.

The McCaskeys are too hands-on for this team. When consultant Ernie Accorsi recommended Ryan Pace for the general manager, the McCaskeys felt he was too young, even though they hired him.

Bob Warja of Chicagonow.com wrote about the McCaskeys’ control problem.

"Hiring and firing, bungles and crumbles, mench and stench… That all continues as long as guys like Ted Phillips are allowed to participate in football decisions. Even when the Bears seemingly do the right thing, they somehow turn that into failed stupidity. They brought in the respected Ernie Accorsi to help develop a list of candidates this last time, but then didn’t let him make the final decision.Bears ownership are control freaks who don’t want to give up control to anyone outside of their family. Again, it’s a minor miracle that they let Phillips into their interweb. And yet now we see why—he’s basically an extension of the family."

As Pace looked at some of the best young coaches to hire as his first coach, the family decided that they wanted a veteran coach to “help” Pace. That resulted in hiring a retread, John Fox.

Now it appears Pace and Fox are having differences.

Pace went with Floyd in the draft largely because Fox coveted that elite pass rusher. When he was with the Carolina Panthers, they drafted Julius Peppers. When he was with the Denver Broncos, they drafted Von Miller.

There was great pressure for the Chicago Bears to draft a quarterback in this year’s draft. That quarterback could be groomed and ready when Jay Cutler left the team.

While many credited Fox for turning franchises around in his second year, the quarterback position had more to do with that than the pass rusher, even as great as they were. Carolina drafted Cam Newton and Denver signed Peyton Manning. Those two players were the biggest reasons for the turnaround.

Dak Prescott was available in the fourth round, a round in which the Bears had three picks. They wasted the highest of those picks to draft Floyd. They did not take Prescott, and now look at what he is doing in Dallas.

Pace needs to do his job without interference. The McCaskeys need to stay away and stop meddling. Fox needs to coach with the players given to him.

Until the decision makers at the top get their acts together, expect to see a lot more losses than wins from the Chicago Bears.
