Cubs come back from six runs down to beat Seattle

It was the end of July, and the Chicago Cubs came out pretty hot out of the All Star break. Even so, their grip on their newfound success was still tenuous.

After finishing the first half on a 5-16 slide, teams started thinking that the Cubs were not this unbeatable machine. Their divisional lead, which was at 13 games at one point, was down to just six-and-a-half.

This was another Sunday Night Baseball game on ESPN. Brian Matusz was the starter. After three innings and three two-run homers, he and the Cubs found themselves down 6-0.

Then the Cubs got serious.

They scored two runs in the fifth, one in the seventh, and three in the ninth, sending the game into extra innings.

Maddon was in rare form on this night. In the top of the seventh, he did not want to lose Travis Wood, so when a right-handed hitter came up, Wood was moved to left field.

Wood came up with a catch of a fly ball that went to the wall. The Cubs survived that, and went on.

In the twelfth, Maddon came up with another crazy idea. He decided to use Jon Lester as a pinch hitter. Using a pitcher as a pinch hitter was not the crazy move, as the Cubs had some good hitting pitchers. The crazy move was using Lester, who was not one of them.

With Heyward on third, Lester laid down a perfect bunt. Heyward scored, and Wrigley Field was shaking with all the celebration by fans.

This game propelled the Cubs to another big run, and they ended up running away with the division.
