The Chicago Cubs reached 103 wins

Having the Cubs reach 100+ wins was very big for the franchise. I know some just care that they won the division, but winning 100 games is pretty special. It was the first time in Maddon’s managerial career he led a team to 100 wins.

The win total was the Cubs’ highest since 1935. The team spent the season breaking a lot of long-standing team marks (1908 is next).

That provides the franchise and its fans a psychological lift. We saw many great Cubs teams over the years, but never one as great as this one. While many keep bringing up 1908 or the goat, none of those other teams were as complete as this one.

The Cubs got off to a scorching start to the season. After 31 games, they owned a 25-6 record and there was talk about them breaking the Major league record of 116 wins (owned by the Cubs and the Seattle Mariners).

Then the team hit a stretch in June and lasting through the All Star break in which they stumbled through a 5-16 record. They played 23 of 33 games on the road, and they played 24 consecutive games. That stretch ended up costing them a chance at the record.

After resting during the break, the Cubs again came out like gangbusters. They went 20-6 right after the break and established their dominance again. From there, they just kept winning. After going 53-35 in the first half, they went 50-23-1 (that “1” still seems weird).

Hopefully the Cubs can win just 11 more wins so they can finally silence all that goat talk.
