Jake Arrieta throws his second career no-hitter

On April 21st, the Chicago Cubs owned a record of 11-4. It was a solid start for a team that had many high expectations.

The Cubs wanted to send a message, however.

Jake Arrieta took the mound against the Cincinnati Reds. Three innings passed, then six innings passed, yet the Reds did not scrape out a hit.

The no-hitter watch was on.

Arrieta already had a no-hitter during his own magical season of 2015. As unhittable as he was at the time, many felt he could finish the job.

He certainly finished the job.

Arrieta received a ton of help from his teammates (they scored 16 runs), but he did it all by himself as he hit a home run.

When the dust settled and the last out made, he became the first Cubs starter to throw no-hitters in back-to-back seasons.

As it turned out, Arrieta came down to earth. He did not have another video game season, but he still had an excellent season. He finished with a record of 18-8, a 3.10 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP with 190 strikeouts in 197-and-1/3 innings and some felt he had an off-year.

The Chicago Cubs and Jake Arrieta sent a message that the 2015 season was not a fluke, and they were going to be strong contenders in 2016.
