Chicago Bears mock draft: Full seven-round picks
Jayron Kearse (6-foot-4, 220 pounds), S, Clemson
The Chicago Bears picked up a gem in the late rounds in last season’s draft by getting Adrian Amos. Perhaps they can do it again this year.
Jayron Kearse is a freakishly tall safety. That goes well for him, since he is the nephew of former NFL star Jevon Kearse. He is also a cousin of another NFL star, Philip Buchanon.
Kearse had 184 tackles and seven interceptions in his three years at Clemson. He was named to the All-ACC First Team in 2014, and Second Team in 2015.
With his long legs and good speed, Kearse is able to gain a lot of ground quickly. Because of that, he could line up in a single-high coverage, and position himself deeper than normal, thus taking away the deep ball on speedy receivers. With his height, he can battle for the ball against the taller receivers.
Even though he is a little thin, he enjoys hitting people (though he will need to fill out his frame a bit).
Some scouts believe Kearse does not have the sense of urgency they want to see out of a safety. Perhaps that could be because he covers more ground without having to work as hard. In any case, he has the body and ability to become a volume tackler.
I believe Anrel Rolle can play a big part in Kearse’s development. He can help Kearse put everything together, and when he does that, he could have as good a career as his family members had.
