Chicago Bears mock draft 3.0: Added versatility
Kevin Dodd (6-foot-5, 280 pounds), DE, Clemson
The Chicago Bears did a good job in signing Akiem Hicks away from the Partiots, but with the loss of Jarvis Jenkins, they need someone on the other side.
While Shaq Lawson got all the attention for Clemson, Dodd had a great season himself. With 23.5 tackles for loss and 12 sacks, he ranked second in both categories behind Lawson. He also had 46 quarterback pressures.
Dodd has the prototypical body for his position. He has a high motor and is relentless in his approach. He will not give an inch or give the blocker a break at any moment.
Dodd has long arms and strong hands. He also has the discipline to contain the back-side and cut off the outside run.
Dodd will have to improve his hand moves. He tends to use the same tactics and blockers can pick that up quickly.
Dodd was especially impressive in the National Championship Game against Alabama. He blew through the Crimson Tide offensive line, recording five tackles for loss and three sacks.
Dodd started one season with Clemson, so he could learn a lot with a guy like Hicks helping him out. Hicks has the championship pedigree and Dodd can be the recipient of some good counseling.
Having Dodd would help in bringing back a Chicago Bears defense that puts a lot of pressure on an opposing offense. The Bears are used to having that relentless defense, and Dodd fits right in.
