Chicago Bears free agency: Analyzing the first day
Danny Trevathan, Linebacker
This is the player Ryan Pace and the Chicago Bears were set to sign. The Bears had trouble with their inside linebackers in 2015. Shea McClellin was one of the team’s leading tacklers, but he was getting those tackles five to ten yards past where he lined up.
That is not good.
Now the Bears have a playmaker at linebacker. Trevathan can play the run as well as the pass, and he is a hard hitter.
Trevathan also has a nose for the football. In the Super Bowl, he recovered two fumbles. He also led the defense with eight tackles.

Turnovers are something the Chicago Bears defense is in dire need. They ranked among the worst defenses in causing turnovers, and that is something that needs to change. Trevathan can help do that.
At age 25, Trevathan is at the prime of his career. He had 109 tackles and two interceptions in 2015. His two interceptions would have tied him with Kyle Fuller for the team lead. He is the type of player who can help change the Chicago Bears defense. He is the one Vic Fangio can depend on to keep the defense on point and return to being the Monsters of the Midway once again.
These were the major signings made by the Chicago Bears on Day One of the new NFL season. There are still some moves to be made, such as signing a tight end and signing a defensive lineman. There is also a need at left tackle.

Some of these moves can be made through the draft, but there will be more free agent signings. Let’s just hope that the next moves they make can raise as much hope as their first moves did.
