Malik Jackson, Defensive End

The Chicago Bears need to upgrade their line. While the Bears’ defense did well in passing yards allowed in 2015 (they ranked fourth in the NFL), but they did not put enough pressure on the quarterbacks to force them to throw interceptions. They ranked just 30th in interceptions.

The Bears face some great quarterbacks in the NFC North, so they need a pass rush to make them uncomfortable and force them into mistakes.

A great pass rush not only puts pressure on the quarterbacks, but also alleviates some of the pressure off the defensive backs. In 2015, the Chicago Bears’ cornerbacks were under a great amount of pressure with receivers running around for seconds on end because the line could not get to the quarterback. When that happens, eventually the receiver will get open, and big plays ensue.

Jackson had 46 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 2015. He just turned 26, so he is in his prime. He adds youth AND experience on the line. He could be a great leader on the team, helping second-year man Eddie Goldman avoid the sophomore slump.

Jackson could also help Pernell McPhee. Blockers will have to decide who to double team, and whoever isn’t will wreak havoc.

Jackson played in a 3-4 defensive scheme, so he will be familiar with the Bears’ system. He is also familiar with head coach John Fox, who was his coach in Denver before coming to Chicago.

The Chicago Bears would hit a home run in signing Malik Jackson. Picking him up would allow them to go after a linebacker in the first round of the draft. I am sure he will get a phone call from Pace and the Bears.
