Jerell Adams (6-foot-5, 245 pounds), South Carolina

Adams is just a pure athlete. In high school, he played basketball in addition to football. On the football team, he played just about every position. He played quarterback, tight end, linebacker, defensive end and punter. I think he also worked the concession stand at halftime.

South Carolina’s coach, Steve Spurrier, originally planned on playing Adams on defense. He kept him on offense, however, and that seems to be a good choice.

Adams was the Gamecocks second-leading receiver. He had 28 receptions for 421 yards and three touchdowns. Not bad, considering how awful South Carolina’s quarterbacks played.

Adams looks the part of tight end. He is tall and has long arms. His experience as a power forward helps him when he is battling defenders for the ball. He is a nice, big target for Cutler to hit. He also has soft hands.

Adams uses his long legs to make long strides. That adds to his speed. He has the ability to create separation from the defender. Once the ball is in the air, he does a good job at going after it.

Adams is also a good blocker. He is good at the point of attack, and even though he is not a powerful run blocker, he has good technique and good feet. He is able to steer defenders away and open holes.

Adams will need to bulk up at the next level. Added strength will help him be a more powerful blocker.

The bad offense at South Carolina hurt Adams’ numbers. At the NFL Combine and his Pro Day, he will get a chance to show what he can do. He could be a good fit for the Chicago Bears.
