Kelvin Beachum, Tackle — Pittsburgh Steelers

Yes, I just said that the Chicago Bears should look to avoid dealing with injured players, and I am recommending a lineman who is dealing with a torn ACL.

Beachum is different, however.

ACL rehabs are not as devastating as they once were, and Beachum has the advantage of being just 26 years old. The Bears could sign him to a short-term deal, full of incentives, or what is called a “prove it” contract.

Before going down, Beachum was a top-five offensive lineman, and he can get back there.

It would be foolish to underestimate his resolve. He was the Steelers’ seventh-round pick (number 284 overall). He worked his way from trying just to make the team, to being its starter since the 2013 season, to being one of the top lineman on any team.

Beachum realized how he took things for granted before his injury. He will be working hard to get back and enjoy every moment he has.

“Football is very important,” he said. “It’s a bread winner — a sport that had provided a tremendous opportunity, but my family has given me the strength to endure the greatest adversity of my life.”

Beachum has come a long way, but still has a way to go for what he expects. “No one imagined me in the NFL. Now, I envision myself not as a Pro Bowler but an All-Pro because that’s the ultimate reflection of respect from your peers.”

The Chicago Bears could use a player like Kelvin Beachum to represent the team both on and off the field.
