Chicago Bears draft prospects: Offensive linemen
Ryan Kelly, Center (6-foot-4, 300 pounds) — Alabama
Kelly is the leader of the National Champion Crimson Tide’s offensive line. He is a grinder who communicates well on the field. He is strong as an ox who opened holes for Heisman Trophy-winner running back Derrick Henry.
Kelly is athletic, and is able to get to the second level opening holes for the running game. He also has very good awareness, and in the passing game, he is nimble enough to mirror the defender and keep him away from his quarterback. He has not allowed a sack in two seasons.
Kelly is quick off the snap. He is effective in keeping defenders off his body.
Kelly is a smart man as well. He was the 2015 SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year, and he was on the Honor Roll three times and the Dean’s List twice.
What Kelly has to work on is his aggression. He sometimes gets too aggressive, and he ends up off balance and on the ground.
Alabama had some great depth at center. They had Barrett Jones, considered the best center in college, and replaced him with Kelly, who is now considered the best center in college.
Kelly’s leadership and championship experience would help the Chicago Bears. I have always been a proponent of having players who have experience in winning, be it at college or wherever. A player has a different air about him when he experiences winning for a while.
Kelly comes from a winning team and he is a proven winner. Jay Cutler would appreciate him.
