The Chicago Bears have a need for depth at cornerback, and although they will probably dip into the draft pool, they may also need a proven veteran to help.

The Chicago Bears need help at cornerback. They had an up-and-down season at the position, but after Tracy Porter and Kyle Fuller, the pickings are slim.

It is definite that the Bears will dip into the draft pool to get a good, young player, but the team may also need to pick up a veteran to shore up the position.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio loves to move his players around. Versatility is a key to his defense, so they need players who can advance that philosophy.

Tracy Porter did well in his one-year “prove it” contract, and will likely get an extension. He was credited with helping Fuller get out of the early-season funk that threatened to land him on the bench. He showed Fuller how to be a true professional in preparation, and the lesson was learned well.

Bryce Callahan looked like he may belong on the field, but just as a backup. After that, the cupboard is empty.

With about $52 million burning a hole in their pockets (and probably more by the time free agency hits), the Chicago Bears are in place to be a major player in free agency. They need to be careful with their spending, however. They must choose the right player for their system and not just a big name.
