Chicago Bears Draft Prospects: Outside Linebackers
Myles Jack (6-foot-1, 245 pounds) — UCLA
Jack is an incredible athletic specimen. Even on a team full of prospects, he stands out. He has a compact built, light feet, fluid turning motion and great ball skills. It helps that he was, at one point, a RUNNING BACK for the Bruins (he was the Pac-12’s Offensive AND Defensive Player of the Year in 2013).
Jack has the quickness and fluidity to cover backs and tight ends in coverage. He has good burst and anticipation so he can get to the ball quickly.
Jack is an effective edge rusher, and he likes to create contact. He has great mechanics when tackling. When he gets to the ball carrier, there is little to no extra yardage gained.
While Jack likes contact, sometimes he lets that get in the way of making a play. He will be just as content lowering the boom on a lead blocker during a run rather than avoid him and get to the ball carrier.
In coverage, Jack likes to shadow the receiver and use him as an indicator of when the pass is coming. He needs to turn his head and locate the ball. In the pros, if he does not turn his head, he will be called for pass interference.
Like Jaylon Smith, Jack suffered a torn ACL. He suffered it back in September, though. Like Smith, he is still considered a top-15 pick.
There are many prognosticators who mock Jack at eleven to the Chicago Bears. With his height, I feel he may be a better fit in a 4-3 scheme, where there are other defensive linemen who can engage the big blockers.
When you see Jack, you know you are getting a football player who loves the game. He will do whatever is asked of him to help the team win. He is a coach’s dream, and will have a good career.
