Chicago Bears Draft Prospects: Outside Linebackers
Deion Jones (6-foot-1, 230 pounds) — Louisiana State
This season, Jones recorded 88 tackles (12.5 for loss), 5 sacks, 2 interceptions (one brought back for a touchdown) and a fumble recovery.
Those are all very good stats, but they still don’t give you a good idea about Jones’ abilities. I believe he is the best outside linebacker in the country, and with the postseason activities (Senior Bowl, combines) he will back up what I say.
Jones is projected to be picked in the third round, but his workouts will have his stock skyrocket.
Jones has excellent instincts to play the position, and is very athletic. He is considered one of the smartest players in this year’s draft, and he will be a three-down player at the higher level.
When engaged, Jones has the ability to slip off the block quickly, and when tackling, he drives through his target and does a good job of securing the tackle.
In coverage, Jones is able to stick with tight ends, and can even line up at cornerback. That will come in handy with the way Vic Fangio likes to use different formations and move his players around.
Jones will be a Chicago Bears fan favorite. He is already becoming the scouts’ favorite. He started this season with just one career start, and now at the end he is a projected third-round pick. When it is all said and done, Deion Jones will be one of the top outside linebackers chosen.
