Mike McCoy

McCoy is the current San Diego Chargers head coach, and has been since 2013. He has not left yet, but the Chargers are in a state of flux. They will likely move to Los Angeles, and his status as coach may not be solid.

If McCoy does leave the Chargers, Fox may consider him the leading candidate to replace Gase. McCoy was his offensive coordinator for four seasons in Denver (2009-2012), and worked under him with the Carolina Panthers for seven seasons (2002-2008) as his quarterbacks coach and passing coordinator.

Fox knows exactly what he has in McCoy, so he has a great comfort level with him.

McCoy has worked with Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers over the past four seasons, so he can handle someone like Jay Cutler.

Cutler may not like it, but he and Philip Rivers are similar quarterbacks. They both have enormous talent, but the results on the field have not been there, for a variety of reasons.

They are both fiery personalities (as is Manning’s), so McCoy’s experience with Rivers will help if he works with Cutler.

As I mentioned, McCoy is still under contract with the Chargers. He may not be available, and even if he is, he could be considered for a head coaching job elsewhere. With the uncertain status with the Chargers, however, and with possible player turnover, McCoy could be convinced to come to the Chicago Bears and work with his mentor once again.
