5. Dexter Fowler Needs To Keep Getting On Base
Dexter Fowler is one of the most important players on this team. At the lead-off spot, he sets the table for the big boppers.
Having an effective lead-off man is crucial for an offense. The guys like Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber can hit home runs all they want, but hitting home runs with men on base helps make it easier to win.

As you can see from this table, Fowler is a very good table setter. The Cubs are a great twenty-nine games over .500. When he does not get on base, the Cubs are a pedestrian team.
Fowler has been a good barometer on how the Cubs are doing. The Cubs got to a good start in April when he had an on-base percentage of .372. In May and June, when the Cubs had a 28-27 record, Fowler’s on-base percentage dropped to .312.
Since July, Fowler’s on-base percentage is .397, raising his overall percentage to .350.
Fowler must continue getting on base. If he does, then the Cubs will be playing in the playoffs and not watching them.
So there you have it. The keys for the Chicago Cubs to continue this magical season into the playoffs. If these simple keys happen, we will see them make a run in October.
Let’s just see how far into October they play.
