Jay Cutler’s first year with Mike Tice as his offensive coordinator in 2012 was about as successful as his season with Ron Turner as an offensive coordinator.
On the season, Cutler had a QBR of 50.23 to go along with an interception percentage of 3.2 percent. In addition, Cutler had 10 wins with Tice as his offensive coordinator in 2012–tying his record from the 2010 season.
The problem with Tice and Cutler is that the Bears’ quarterback did not respect his offensive coordinator. Throughout the 2012 season, it was clear that Tice was out of his depths as the Bears’ offensive coordinator. Cutler realized that fact and never bought into Tice’s system.
At the end of the season, then Bears’ general manager Phil Emery made sweeping changes as he fired Lovie Smith as the team’s head coach and Tice was relieved of his duties as part of the process.
That led to the Bears being in search of a head coach and coaching staff that had the sole purpose of being hired to get the most out of Cutler. Enter head coach Marc Trestman and offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer.
