After a 38-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers during Week 4 of the 2014 season, the Chicago Bears entered their Week 5 game against the Carolina Panthers with a record of 2-2.

More from Chicago Bears

After entering the fourth quarter of their Week 5 game against the Carolina Panthers with a 24-21 lead, the Bears were on their way to moving their record to 3-2 on the season.

The Bears’ defense collapsed, however, as the team allowed back-to-back scoring drives late in the fourth quarter to allow the Panthers to come back and take the 31-24 victory.

There were a couple of concerning trends that occurred in this game. The first was that the Bears’ offense was non-existent in the fourth quarter. After scoring 24 points in the first three quarters of the game, the Bears’ offense was held scoreless in the fourth quarter of the game.

The second trend was that the Bears’ defense failed to hold the lead in the fourth quarter. With the Bears’ offense being held scoreless in the fourth quarter, the pressure was on the team’s defense to hold onto the lead. That task proved to be too much for the Bears’ defense as the unit allowed 10 points in the final quarter of the game.

The loss to the Panthers in Week 5 was disappointing for the Bears. While the Panthers would go on to make the playoffs, they were not playing like a playoff team during the earlier portions of the 2014 season. The Bears had the opportunity to win but fell flat in the fourth quarter.

Record after Week 5: 2-3
