After a disappointing 23-20 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Chicago Bears were facing what seemed to an insurmountable task by defeating the San Francisco 49ers in Week 2–a game that served as the 49ers’ first game in their new stadium.

The Chicago Bears’ game against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 2 of the 2014 NFL Season started off as expected.

During the early portions of the game, the Bears’ offense had no answer for the looks they were getting from the 49ers’ defense. Similarly, the Bears’ defense had no answer for the rushing attack of the 49ers.

But the Bears’ showed life in the second half against the 49ers.

After entering the fourth quarter trailing the 49ers 20-7, Cutler threw three touchdown passes to bring the Bears back and give them a 28-20 victory over San Francisco. Cutler finished the game with four passing touchdowns and three of those were with wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

Beyond strengthening the connection between Cutler and Marshall, the game against the 49ers in Week 2 also served as a coming out party for Bears’ rookie cornerback Kyle Fuller. Fuller recorded two interceptions off 49ers’ quarterback Colin Kaepernick during the second half of the game. Fuller’s interceptions sparked the comeback for the Bears.

The feeling after the Bears’ win over the 49ers was optimism. Not only did the Bears, at the time, defeat a team that was expected to win the NFC championship game but then Bears’ head coach Marc Trestman showed that he was capable of making in-game adjustments.
