Leonard Williams (6-foot-5, 300 pounds) USC
Williams is the most NFL-ready defensive tackles in this year’s draft. He is a monster with unmatched size, athleticism and power. He is a physical mismatch for linemen. He is too quick for interior linemen while being to powerful for offensive tackles.
Williams has impressed scouts with his quick first step. He also has great lateral agility. He is flexible and has good balance. He is able to penetrate gaps and attack on stunts.
Williams has long arms which allow him to keep linemen from latching onto him. When they do, he has the technique to chop away blockers. Has good ball awareness and is excellent in pursuit.
Williams has to incorporate more moves in pass rush. He started to develop a spin move already. In the pass rush, he sometimes gets too straight up.
With his abilities, USC used Williams all over the defensive line. He adds any defense a lot of versatility.
Williams is expected to go to the Tennessee Titans with the #2 pick. There are plenty of other teams who need a quarterback and may be willing to deal with the Titans for that pick. If they do make a deal, Williams may drop on the Bears’ laps. If he does (as unlikely as it may be), the Bears should be quick to scoop him up. He is a difference-maker on the defensive line, and any team would be better with him on their roster.
