Brett Hundley, QB, UCLA

Whether we like it or not, Jay Cutler will probably be the Bears quarterback in 2015. His huge contract practically guarantees that.

Whether or not Cutler returns in 2015, he is definitely not the answer for the Bears future. They will need a quarterback. They have Jimmy Clausen and David Fales as backups, but neither of them raise hopes.

Everyone is on the Marcus Mariota-Jameis Winston bandwagon, but Hundley could be a very good professional quarterback.

Hundley has a tall, well-built body with a powerful arm. In UCLA, he was asked to throw aggressively downfield, and he did so regularly. He has a quick setup and release, and had accuracy to go with his arm strength.

Hundley’s vision is excellent. He can feel the pressure well, step up or run out to buy time, all the while looking downfield at his targets. This is where Cutler fails. He runs away, then throws off his back foot, his passes landing in the opposing defender’s hands.

Like Mariota, Hundley has to show he can run an offense from under center. At UCLA, he took almost all his snaps from the shotgun and relied on pre-snap reads. The offense was not pro set, so scouts want to see how he handles that.

Hundley could end up being a steal for the Bears. He won’t have the pressure Mariota and Winston will have as soon as they step onto the field. He can improve while Cutler does whatever he does, and when it’s time to dump Cutler, Hundley can step right in.
