Dante Fowler, Jr., Florida, DE/OLB

With Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator, the Bears are transitioning to a 3-4 defense. In that scheme, they need an edge rusher who can also drop back.

Neither Jared Allen nor Lamarr Houston fit that system. They are 4-3 guys, and even at that they struggled mightily this season. Look for the Bears to cut ties somehow, some way with one or both of them.

That opens a spot for Fowler. He is perfectly suited for the 3-4 defense and is the number one player at his position.

Fowler’s versatility is what makes him attractive. He can play either left or right DE, OLB and even played some DT. This is something that could help the Bears. Having players who can play different positions adds depth to the defense.

Fowler has light feet and is very athletic, but he also has a powerful, compact frame. He gets off the ball well and has the quickness to shed tackles.

Fowler does need to improve his recognition. There were times when he went full-out at a running back, only to have that back run past him. He needs to work to improve against the run, but with his athleticism and work ethic, he should get there at the higher level.
