Now that the Chicago Bears fired Phil Emery and Marc Trestman, what do they do next?

More from Chicago Bears

Well, Chicago Bears fans got their wish. After a miserable 2014 season, the team decided to fire both GM Phil Emery and head coach Marc Trestman. For those wondering, it will also be the end of other coaches like Mel Tucker, so don’t worry he won’t be back.

Now that the Bears got that out of the way early, what do they do next?

With Virginia and George McCaskey in attendance, the Bears gave one more pitiful performance to end the season. Virginia is said to be embarrassed by what happened with the team this season.

The Bears will have to get moving on finding replacements. There are three other teams with openings, and that number will probably go up. If they don’t strike quickly, they won’t get the men they need and want.

The Bears need to hire a coach who can command a room. Athletes want to be coached. If something goes wrong, a coach has to go right in there and tell the player of that mistake. If nothing is said, the player doesn’t know how to correct the mistake.

If the coach cannot take command of the team, players will try to walk over the coach, like what happened to Trestman. That coach will have to stand up to Jay Cutler, especially.

consequences for bad play, the Bears have just fired coordinators and head coaches.

Cutler has to know now that if he doesn’t produce, he will be replaced. Draft a quarterback, or see what David Fales has to offer by elevating him to backup. Trestman apparently told Cutler that he had to improve or be benched, but Cutler just did not believe it would happen. That was why he was shocked when Trestman actually did it. And when he had to start the season finale when his replacement, Jimmy Clausen, suffered a concussion? He led his offense to a ZERO touchdown game.

First, however, a new general manager has to be hired. Part of the problem Emery and Trestman had was the Emery fired the popular Lovie Smith, and Trestman replaced him. The veterans had an almost cult-like love of Smith, and they just did not make things easier for Trestman and Emery.

After an 8-8 season in 2011, the Bears should have fired Smith along with Jerry Angelo. That way, if the Bears did have that 10-6 record with another coach, things would have been smoother for everyone involved.

The next general manager will have to do well in the draft. The Bears have tried signing big name free agents, but that hasn’t worked. If you look at the better teams around the NFL, a lot of their key players are there through their draft.

This may ultimately be something that some may look back on Emery and give him credit. There are some good, young players that may pan out and  help out the new regime. There are players like Kyle Fuller, Alshon Jeffery, Kyle Long (though Long probably could have been picked later in the draft), Brock Vereen and other may give the Bears another run with good, young talent.

Before you know it, it will be time to look at the draft. The Bears have the seventh pick so they should get a good player. The need for a general manager to be hired so he can share a vision for the Bears to follow is imperative. Emery and Trestman are gone now, so let’s move forward with new leadership and hopefully new hope.
