The Chicago Bears begin preparations for the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday. There is no mistaking the fact that the Bears’ season is on the line when the team plays the Packers on Sunday. This is a Bears’ team that has a record of 3-5 on the season and the head coach needed a vote of confidence before the month of the November. Typically, that is not a good sign. Nonetheless, lets get the day started with the November 5, 2014 edition of the The DWC Morning Paper.

News

"Wilson, who has been eligible to practice since Week 7, has yet to participate in practice this season. As Trestman indicated on Monday, the team does not want to start the 21-day clock. One of the rules of the IR-Return list is that a player must be activated within 21 days of him returning to practice."

"Jose Abreu and Chris Sale were named finalists for Baseball Writers Association of America postseason awards, with the winners scheduled to be revealed next week.Abreu was nominated for the American League’s Rookie of the Year Award, as expected, while Sale was named one of three finalists for the AL Cy Young Award."

"“I’ve lost the love and passion to play the game,” Soriano said in a radio interview Tuesday in his native Dominican Republic. “Right now, my family is the most important thing.”"

Opinions

  • Jay Cutler needs to take control of the Chicago Bears in the second half of the season.

"That is the sense of unity that the team needs to show on a consistent basis in the second half of the season. Cutler is not perfect. Cutler is never going to reach that elite status that the likes of Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Aaron Rodgers have reached. But, Cutler is the Bears’ starting quarterback. As such, Cutler needs be in control of the offense at all times. Such a mindset could lead to an improved effort from the Bears’ offense in the second half of the season."

  • Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman needs to stop acting like a college professor and more like a NFL head coach.

"What I see is a lot of analysis and a lot of reports coming from Trestman. He is acting like a college professor. These players are grown men and do not need schooling. They need a leader who can take charge and express his vision to the team, making them follow him. That is what is missing right now, and I don’t know if Trestman has what it takes to do that."

"So, then… what of Buster Olney and Jon Heyman saying they expect that Martin will sign with the Cubs? Some of it is speculation. Some of it is probably based on conversations with agents. Martin wants to make his money this offseason and while the Dodgers can provide a big pay day, they won’t do it unless they need to. Martin needs someone to drive up his price, otherwise the Dodgers are bidding against the small market Pirates and the mid-market Blue Jays. Getting the Cubs involved works to Martin’s advantage in terms of raising the stakes."

Rumors

  • The Cubs have targeted Martin at the beginning of free agency.

"With the Cubs being a young team that is on the doorsteps of contending, the team is going to need veteran leadership. Given that a starting pitcher only pitches in one out of every five games, the Cubs need the veteran leadership from a position player. Catcher is one of the few positions that is not expected to be filled with a prospect. Therefore, Martin would be an ideal addition for the Cubs."
