With Center Roberto Garza coming off a very good season, and getting paid, as well as the acquisition of former New Orleans Center Brian De La Puente this off-season it’s doubtful they draft someone who is a center only prospect. So I picked centers who project to be able to step in right away and compete at a guard spot. It’s also very possible they draft their center of the future.  With a one year prove it type deal, and perhaps no chance to prove it if Garza starts all season long De La Puente just may bolt next season.  I personally feel the Bears will re-sign De La Puente as this is likely Garza’s last season, because I believe assurances had to be made for De La Puente to sign such a modest deal with no guarantee to start or even a mention of a competition to start. I think he plays swing guard/back up center this season, and takes over as starter next season.

As for drafting a guard I feel there’s a very good chance it happens. Not just for depth either. If Kyle Long is moved to tackle – a move I feel should be made –  and Jordan Mills has to compete for that RG spot there’s a good chance if they draft the right guy he beats out Mills and upgrades that offensive line. For example if a kid like Cyril Richardson, or Chris Watt gets scooped up in the mid rounds by the Bears I think they’re picking them to compete to start not to offer depth or a practice body.
