With the start of the NFL Regular Season on Sunday, the Chicago Bears released their first official depth chart of the regular season on Tuesday.
The Bears set their 53-man roster on Saturday, with a few alterations since then, the team revealed their depth chart.
Here is how the Bears depth chart stacks up.
Quarterbacks
- Jay Cutler
- Josh McCown
- No surprise here for the Bears’ quarterbacks. Though, there is a question over whether or not the Bears should have kept a third quarterback. Jordan Palmer is sill a free agent and there is a chance that the Bears will bring him back at some point in the season, just as there is a chance that Matt Blanchard will return to the team after week 10.
Running Backs
- Matt Forte
- Michael Bush
- Michael Ford
- The Bears running backs are in a good position to start the season. Matt Forte is expected to have a breakout season for the Bears, while Michael Ford showed some impressive skills during the pre-season.
Full Back
- Tony Fiammetta
- It will be interesting to see how Fiammetta fits into the Bears’ offense. It seems more likely that the Bears will run multiple tight-end sets as opposed to having Fiammetta on the field.
Wide Receivers
- Brandon Marshall
- Alshon Jeffery
- Earl Bennett
- Joe Anderson
- Marquess Wilson
- Eric Weems
- The Bears have a talented wide receiver group this season. Marshall will have his numbers, but expect Jeffery to improve in his second year in the NFL.
Tight Ends
- Martellus Bennett
- Steve Maneri
- Dante Rosario
- Bennett gives the Bears a pass catching tight end that they have been missing. Eventually, Rosario will pass Maneri on the depth chart.
Offensive Line
- LT Jermon Bushrod
- LG Matt Slauson
- C Roberto Garza
- RG Kyle Long
- RT Jordan Mills
- One could argue that the Bears’ offensive line will be the most improve position for the team this season. Long and Bushrod appear to be the biggest improvements while Mills and Slauson have impressed the coaching staff in training camp.
Left Defensive End
- Corey Wootton
- Shea McClellin
- Cornelius Washington
- The left defensive end position will be important for the Bears this season. No word on whether Wootton or McClellin will start on Sunday, but both have impressed during the pre-season.
Defensive Tackles
- Henry Melton
- Zach Minter
- Melton returned to practice on Monday for the Bears and should be ready to start on Sunday. Minter was an undrafted free agent for the Bears that impressed during training camp.
Nose Tackles
- Stephen Paea
- Nate Collins
- Paea is looking to build off his productive season for the Bears last season while Collins gives the Bears a veteran presence on the defensive line.
Right Defensive End
- Julius Peppers
- David Bass
- Peppers is said to be 100% healthy and will be one of the leaders on defense for the Bears this season. Bass was acquired from the Oakland Raiders over the weekend.
Weak-Side Linebacker
- Lance Briggs
- Khaseem Green
- Briggs is assuming the “Brian Urlacher” role of the defense while Green will be his pupil.
Middle Linebacker
- D.J. Williams
- Jonathan Bostic
- Williams returned to practice for the Bears on Monday after being sidelined with an injury since July 31. Bostic started in place of Williams during the pre-season and impressed the coaching staff. Will be interesting to see who gets the start for the Bears on Sunday.
Strong-Side Linebacker
- James Anderson
- Blake Costanzo
- Anderson has been lesser-talked about acquisition for the Bears this season. The former Carolina Panther should be a nice player for the Bears defense this season.
Cornerbacks
- Charles Tillman
- Tim Jennings
- Isaiah Frey
- Zack Bowman
- Sherrick McManis
- C.J. Wilson
- Tillman and Jennings will continue to be one of the best cornerback tandems in the league this season. The focus will be on Frey, who will be the team’s starting nickleback this season.
Strong Safety
- Major Wright
- Anthony Walters
- Wright has developed into an effective strong safety for the Bears. The goal this season is for Wright to stay on the field.
Free Safety
- Chris Conte
- Craig Steltz
- Conte, like Wright, has developed into solid safety for the Bears. Expect his development to continue this season.
Special Teams
- K Robbie Gould
- P Adam Podlesh
- LS Patrick Mannelly
- KR/PR Devin Hester
- Notice that Devin Hester is only listed under the special teams category, this should provide a benefit to the Bears this season.
