10 Matt Eberflus Replacements Bears Should Already Be Hunting
By Todd Welter
The Chicago Bears are in a free fall after starting the season 4-2. That happens when the team that is supposed to be smart situationally keeps playing dumb football.
It was Tyrique Stevenson being the poster boy of the team's recent undisciplined play during the Hail Mary the Washington Commanders used to pull off a stunning upset. Penalties hurt the Chicago Bears in their first-half defeat to the Arizona Cardinals.
Head coach Matt Eberflus' job status is starting to come into question after he was retained in the offseason. It was an eyebrow-raising decision by general manager Ryan Poles since it was the perfect time to go with an offensive-minded head coach to match up with rookie Caleb Williams.
Instead, Eberflus' decision to hire Shane Waldron as offensive coordinator looks worse by the day. Now, the Flus nearly endangered the team's best asset, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, when he let him stay in the game at the end of a 29-9 defeat. Williams ended up rolling his ankle, and Eberflus provided a terrible reason to keep him in the game.
That is why it appears Eberflus' days are numbered. He has survived a speculated firing once before. So do not underestimate his relationship with general manager Ryan Poles and the agent they share.
The Bears do not fire coaches midseason, so do not expect him to be canned like the New Orleans Saints just did with Dennis Allen.
If the team continues its downward trend and Eberflus is fired at the end of the season, there are 10 candidates the Bears should consider as his replacement
1. Ben Johnson
He is the desired candidate for every Bears fan. Surprisingly, he pulled his name out of last year's hiring cycle. Hopefully, after another year of success in Detroit, he decides to take a head coaching job.
The offense in Detroit has been at the top of the league in offense since taking over as the OC in 2022.
The only concern about Johnson is he has yet to develop a quarterback successfully. However, Ryan Tannehill did throw for 8000 yards in 2014 and 2015 when Johnson was the assistant quarterback coach in Miami.
Since Tannehill and Jared Goff have thrived in Johnson's offense, it is easy to feel confident Williams would also do well.
