With the serious injury to Danny Trevathan and uncertainty with Pernell McPhee, the Chicago Bears have a need for depth at the linebacker spot. Here are possible choices in the draft.

The Chicago Bears made linebacker a big priority in free agency last year. They made a splash, signing Danny Trevathan and Jerrell Freeman. The year before, they signed Pernell McPhee.

In 2016, the Bears suffered through some bumps with the unit. McPhee and Trevathan suffered injuries and missed 14 games combined, and Freeman missed 4 games because of a suspension for PED use.

The loss of these players did lead to the discovery of Nick Kwiatkoski‘s abilities. He appears to be a good find for the Bears.

The big problem is the loss of Trevathan. I wrote recently about the seriousness of his loss. He suffered a ruptured patella tendon. There is no secure timetable for his return, and even when he does, his play might never be the same.

Therefore, the Bears need to add depth to the linebacker unit. I expect them to go through free agency once again for help, but they need to find some help through the draft as well.
