Chicago Bears’ Season Quickly Spiraling Down

The Chicago Bears’ once promising season is quickly spiraling. After having hopes of a long playoff run at the start of the season, fans are now just hoping the Bears can get a win before the end of the season.

The Chicago Bears have hit rock bottom. At least that’s what their fans are hoping for. If the team has hit rock bottom, then there is nowhere to go but up. If it hasn’t, well…let’s not think about that.

  • For the second straight week, the Bears were embarrassed in the first half of a game. Against the Miami Dolphins, they were shut out in the first half and made Ryan Tannehill look like Dan Marino. This past Sunday, they gave up 38 points, the most ever in half in Chicago Bears history.

The Bears thankfully are entering the bye week. They will try to regroup and salvage whatever they can of a lost season.

After the bye week, things do not get any easier. They go to Lambeau Field to face Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. The last time they faced the Packers, their kicker went to Navy Pier to take in the sights, since his services were not needed. For only the second time in NFL history, a team went an entire game without punting. And that was in Chicago.

The Bears might have the services of Marquess Wilson. Wilson is the perfect representation of this Bears season. There was a lot of hope for the second year receiver, who was under the tutelage of Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery.

Then in August, Wilson broke his clavicle. He had surgery and was placed on short term injury reserve. Hopes for a great season for Wilson went away, and now the bar has been set low. Just having him in practice is success now.

After a great game against the Atlanta Falcons, the Bears offense has looked listless and uninspired. Coach Marc Trestman has continued to put the ball and decision making in Jay Cutler‘s hands, and it is not working. He is not taking advantage of the big targets he has, and is forcing passes he shouldn’t be making.

The Bears made a big investment in Cutler with a new contract, but Cutler has yet to make a commitment to the Bears and their fans. Trestman will continue to leave the ball in Cutler’s hands, and it is ultimately up to Cutler to get his act together. The Bears are tied to Cutler for three years, and he has to get it in his head that if this doesn’t work out, he could find himself out of football. He should read the biography of Jeff George.

On defense, the Bears have suffered some key injuries, but some of the replacements have done a fine job. Kyle Fuller is the leading candidate for Defensive Rookie of the Year. Darryl Sharpton has played well when he is in there. Christian Jones has flashed his athletic ability. Perhaps it is time to go away from Lance Briggs and Shea McClellin and use the younger players. Those youngsters were there against the high-powered Falcons offense and they did a great job. Give them more playing time.

Even with better players, the Bears are still suffering because of Mel Tucker’s defensive scheme. It seems that no matter what personnel is on the field, a lot of times they find themselves out of position. Tucker is not calling for a lot of pressure on quarterbacks, deciding instead to have more players drop back, but the holes are still there.

I have advocated for the Bears to cut their ties with Chris Conte. Seeing that the season may already be too far gone to be saved, I say keep him in there so he can prove why he doesn’t belong in the NFL. I am sure he can do THAT well.

The Bears have to do whatever they can to stop the bleeding and at least get back on track. They may not be a playoff team, but if they can have a winning second half, it can be something to build on for 2015.
