After acquiring 6 veteran defensive ends in free agency (Austen Lane,Trevor Scott, Lamar Houston, Willie Young, Israel Idonijie, and Jared Allen) the Bears GM Phil Emery has made sure that the Bear will not reach for one out of desperation in the draft. If they draft one in the 2014 draft regardless of round it will be because they feel they have something special to offer the team beyond just occupying a roster spot, and providing camp competition. There are some very interesting choices to be made involving some high upside DE’s especially considering the Bears are now open to picking a hybrid end who can be an outside rush specialist in a 4-3 set to get after the quarterback, or as a 3-4 OLB who can play on passing downs as a joker, and play run, pass rush, or even drop into coverage. This draft offers a creative defensive mind with a wealth of possibilities at DE to make them look like geniuses, and perhaps put themselves on the radar for some head coaching possibilities.
