The Chicago Bears were the worst team in the National Football League last season. Now, they are hoping to surprise everyone and be competitive.
It is all going to rely on how they play on both sides of the ball as some really nice additions have been made in all areas.
Of course, nobody is expecting the Super Bowl or anything like that but they very well could become a very solid team right away.
As the preseason is winding down, these are three shocking cuts they should make as soon as possible:
1. PJ Walker
The Chicago Bears should absolutely cut PJ Walker at this point in time.
We all know that the Chicago Bears are going to use Justin Fields as their number-one quarterback. In fact, they are still hoping that he is an elite franchise-changing player which he very well could be.
Nathan Peterman is going to be there. We have heard tons of great things about him and how much the people there love having him. He isn’t very good at playing but he does other things for them there as a member of their roster. He isn’t going anywhere.
That leaves PJ Walker and Tyson Bagent. Of the two, Walker was expected to be QB2 but he has been horrible in the preseason so far.
As for Bagent, he was the one supposed to be cut but he has been sensational in the preseason so far. Of course, he has played well against lesser competition than the starting players but he has done his job to the best of his ability.
It might not be realistic to expect the Bears to cut Walker in favor of Bagent but it would absolutely be the right move.
The Bears are probably in trouble if Fields goes down anyway so they might as well take the risk here. There is no doubt that he deserves to stay more than Walker right now.

2. Dante Pettis
The Chicago Bears don’t need to have Dante Pettis on their team anymore.
For most of National Football League history, the Chicago Bears have had bad wide receivers. There have been a couple of good ones at the top of the roster but the depth has always been weak at that position.
Now, they are hoping that DJ Moore, Darnell Mooney, and Chase Claypool form a very good top-three trio. With Justin Fields trying to develop in the passing game, these three should really help him.
However, the Bears have tons of wide receivers on the roster right now. A few of them have earned jobs as the WR4 or a punt returner but it is hard to see Dante Pettis making that much of an impact.
The Bears don’t need to keep him and he could absolutely be a cut for this team. A lot of things can change but they can’t keep all of these guys.
Unless he has a monster finish to the preseason, it is hard to justify keeping him on this offense. Of all the notable WRs that could get cut, he is at the top of the list.
Again, it is not impossible that he gets to stay but it doesn’t make much sense at this point in time over some of the younger guys.

3. Travis Homer
The Chicago Bears need to be smart with their running backs right now.
There is no way that the Chicago Bears see their running back room as a finished product right now.
They have had some good backs in franchise history including some all-time greats so you’d figure that they won’t be settling anytime soon.
During the off-season, David Montgomery left the Bears in free agency to go to the Detroit Lions. Now, the Bears are left with some players looking to make big moves this season.
Khalil Herbert, D’Onta Foreman, and Roschon Johnson are expected to be the three guys getting the carries for this team in 2023.
With injuries, you never know how things shake out at this position. They need to make sure that whatever they do is smart because they are going to need the running game to be strong to take some pressure off of both Fields’ arms and legs.
Travis Homer is the guy that is likely to get cut. The other three are more valuable at this point in time as Homer is the last guy on the unofficial depth chart.
All of these guys are good players but probably don’t have a spot on this team right now. It is always a hard time of year but it is the reality of it. The Bears have some tough situations to make in the coming weeks before we are done with the preseason.
