5 things the Chicago Bears’ initial 53-man roster tells us
By Ryan Heckman
4. Bears’ OL depth is young
One of the most worrisome aspects of this Bears roster was, is and continues to be the offensive line. Fortunately, their final depth at that spot sits at nine, with three of the four reserves being age 25 or younger; the exception being Jason Spriggs, age 26.
Rookie seventh-round pick Arlington Hambright made the squad, along with Alex Bars, Rashaad Coward and Spriggs.
For over a year now, Bears fans have been clamoring for Alex Bars to get his shot and stick around on the roster permanently. Bars, a former Notre Dame standout, now gets his shot. Bars is one of the couple of younger guys across the offensive line who back up the starters.
Last year, Bars was cut at the end of camp and brought back on the practice squad. In mid-October he was promoted to the active roster. This year, he made it from the get-go.
Should guys like Germain Ifedi or Charles Leno struggle, which very well could happen, one of these guys could fill in. The plus side with the youthful backups is the fact that there is some versatility. Bars can play guard or tackle, as well as Spriggs.
Nagy has put his faith in the youngsters up front. We will see how that pans out should there be a starter that goes down.
