David Montgomery

As mentioned before, the Bears have some running backs in place. Tarik Cohen isn’t the answer and Cordarrelle Patterson cannot be trusted as the primary backup, due to his special teams prowess. Patterson is a sweet player to have on the roster for various reasons, but he cannot be counted on as a guy who handles several carries.. David Montgomery was drafted in the third round to be a guy this team uses at the head of their rushing attack for a long time.

Well, in order for him to potentially evolve into one of the league’s top backs, he needs to develop some more. Things were okay for him in 2019 but he largely didn’t live up to expectations. That is not his fault because the offense around him was a trainwreck. He has all of the talent needed to be a good NFL running back but the team needs to put him in a position to succeed.

A lot of people inside of the Bears organization love this kid. The faith in him is apparent whenever someone speaks about him. That might be a good reason to get him some help in the form of a mentor. If Freeman, who is a multi-time 1000 yard back, can come in and show him the ways it would go a long way in his development. Learning from someone who used to be elite and still can be elite is absolutely something the Bears should see as an opportunity.
