Chicago Bears: Three standout players in loss to Saints
Standout #1: QB Mitch Trubisky
I’ve wavered back and forth on the “Is Mitch good?” debate in the past couple of seasons. This game helped me feel even more confident in declaring that quarterback Mitch Trubisky is a draft bust.
I don’t want this to be true, I’ve always rooted for Trubisky to improve and keep growing as his career progresses. I haven’t seen any evidence that he is improving, and with all the talent on this team, it’s a frustrating thing to admit.
Trubisky was inactive for the Bears loss to the Oakland Raiders two weeks ago in London. He sustained a shoulder injury early in week four against the Vikings and backup Chase Daniel helped lead the Bears to victory.
Trubisky’s injury was to his non-throwing shoulder, and he wore a brace in Sunday’s game to help with the injury. Trubisky didn’t look in pain at any point during the game, but he did seem hesitant to run with the ball.
What was more concerning was how unsure Trubisky looked in the pocket and how many bad throws he made. It was yet another week where Trubisky appeared to be completely unable to read the defense past his first receiver.
A look at Trubisky’s stat line shows that he had decent numbers, but don’t be fooled. He put up a couple of good drives in garbage time and threw two touchdowns against a Saints defensive unit of mostly backups.
Trubisky also threw the ball a career-high 54 times. That’s a decision that’s on Nagy, and the offensive play calling has to be better.
Trubisky needs to show improvement for Bears fans to start believing in him again. He was heavily booed for almost the entire game. The boos quieted later in the game as most fans had already left Soldier Field.
