Chicago Bears Monthly Mailbag: Offensive line, trade deadline, and more

6. A shakeup at tight end and roster needs going forward?
The conversation around the Bears fanbase when it comes to the tight end position centers around what to do with guys like Adam Shaheen and Trey Burton. While both have underperformed since coming to Chicago, the real question should be who do the Bears replace Burton and Shaheen with?
Shaheen has no trade value so if the Bears trade him, he’s not getting traded for more than a day three draft pick. Then there’s Burton, who’s contract guarantees that he’s on the Bears until at least the conclusion of the 2020 NFL regular season. During the 2021 offseason, however, the Bears can release Burton and save $7.1 million dollars in cap space.
The best way for the Bears to address this issue of who to replace Shaheen and Burton with is by looking at potential tight ends in the 2020 NFL Draft. Names to keep an eye on between now and April 2020 are: Brycen Hopkins and Albert Okwuegbunam, two guys that have everything needed to excel in Matt Nagy’s offense.
As of right now, the other roster holes the Bears will need to address in 2020 are right guard if Rashaad Coward or Alex Bars don’t prove their long-term worth over the next 11 games and then safety and cornerback. It’s these three positions that will be major points of emphasis for the Bears during the 2020 offseason.
