Chicago Sports: 5 most bizarre storylines in recent history
The LaRoche’s
The Chris Sale jersey issue wasn’t the only off-field disaster in the 2016 season. The season began with an annoying non-baseball related story. Adam LaRoche retired from baseball because the White Sox put a restriction on his then 14-year-old son being in the clubhouse every single day. They were okay with him sporadically being there but LaRoche was there with his son Drake every single day and the White Sox eventually wanted to slow it down.
He walked away from 13 million dollars by retiring. It was an issue that caused separation and divided in the Chicago White Sox organization. There were players that wanted to boycott games in Adam and Drake’s defense but it never happened. Robin Ventura and Kenny Williams had to release statements defending their stance and it was just a complete mess.
This was happening during Spring Training as the White Sox were headed into a season that they believed that they were going to compete for the A.L. Central title. This, the Fernando Tatis Jr. for James Shields trade, and the Chris Sale jersey issue made 2016 a terrible season to watch for White Sox fans. This LaRoche story is so outlandish, that it takes the prize as the weirdest story in recent Chicago sports history.
This is not a mysterious injury or anything involved with the law, but it is simply crazy. A player retired because he couldn’t have his son in a Major League Baseball locker room every day. It was embarrassing as a White Sox fan.
