1. OL Alex Bars vs. DE Frank Herron

An undrafted free agent that’s quietly having a good preseason for the Bears, Alex Bars appears to be ready to make the Bears 53-man roster. Whenever Bars has been on the field this preseason, he’s caught the attention of many people, including the Bears coaching staff. The Bears also appear to be confident in giving Bars more reps in preseason.

This is what makes his matchup Frank Herron so important. Despite playing in two preseason games so far, Herron has made some plays when he’s gotten a chance to be on the field. While his stats may not be the most impressive, he presents a good matchup for Bars due to a variety of reasons.

A big, strong defensive end, Herron possesses the size and speed to beat out smaller offensive tackles. However, he lacks the consistency needed to be a starter on the field. There are times where he’s clearly getting after the quarterback and times where he’s immediately being shutdown by offensive lineman.

If Bars can shut Herron down throughout the game, there’s no reason to think he can’t be a second-string offensive lineman on the Bears 53-man roster. He’s got enough upside to the point where with the right coaching, he’ll end up being a solid starter beginning in 2020.
