Chicago Bears Training Camp Preview: Inside Linebackers

4. Why is 2019 important for Danny Trevathan?
When the Bears signed Danny Trevathan to a four-year deal back during the 2016 offseason, the team gave Trevathan a lucrative contract because they knew he’d be the linebacker of the future. However, 2019 is potentially set to be Trevathan’s last as a member of the Bears because he’s in the final year of his contract.
Since the Bears need to think about extending players like Mitchell Trubisky, Leonard Floyd, and Eddie Jackson, Trevathan may end up being the odd one out. However, if he produces, the Bears could decide that he’s worth another contract extension.
Although both sides may want a new contract next offseason, the reality is going to be that both Trevathan and the Bears view each other differently to the point where the Bears could lose out on Trevathan all together.
While Trevathan is a good linebacker, he’s by no means the type of guy who will absolutely take over a game and set the tone for an entire defense. He is, however, one of the more vocal guys in the Bears locker room and would be viewed as a starter on any defense.
In a contract year, if Trevathan can perform in training camp and all throughout 2019 to the point where he earns his first career Pro Bowl appearance, then it will mean that Trevathan has either earned himself a new contract with the Bears or paved the road for his exit from Chicago.
