Chicago Bears: Hometown free agents to consider
By Ryan Heckman
Running Back Tevin Coleman
Birthplace: Oak Forest, IL
Most NFL fans know, at this point, Tevin Coleman should be an intriguing free agent option. First off, let’s just assume that the Bears trade Jordan Howard. If they do, then Coleman becomes a legitimate candidate in Chicago.
The only problem with Coleman is that he’s coming off of a season where he should have been fantastic. After Devonta Freeman went down early in the year, you would have thought Coleman’s numbers would skyrocket. Unfortunately, they didn’t. He was fine, but not outstanding. I believe this hurts his overall value in free agency — which could be good for the Bears.
Even as a second-fiddle, so to speak, Coleman has been very good. For this reason, he would likely flourish next to a guy like Tarik Cohen. A two-headed monster type of back field seems to fit Coleman the best, and he would have that with the Bears.
In 56 career games over four seasons, Coleman has rushed for 2,340 yards on an average of 4.4 yards per carry. He’s also caught 92 passes for 1,010 yards. In total, Coleman has found pay dirt 29 times as a pro — primarily as a backup.
There’s no telling what the Bears will do quite yet, but should they make a big move and move on from Howard, expect Coleman’s name to come up as a potential replacement.
