Chicago Bears: These quarterbacks have made us who we are
By Sam Fels
Let’s all just take a moment to focus on the fact that the Bears needed fill-ins for Jim Miller. From every angle. Now that that’s over…
Still high off their 13-3 season in ’01, the Bears were sure Jim Miller would stay healthy and productive for the next season. Guess how that went. No, go on, guess.
Anyway, Chris Chandler was brought in to back him up, except by that point he’d already had 49 concussions and clearly didn’t want any part of the field. This would be a continuing theme.
Which led to one start for Henry Burris. At least he wasn’t immobile?
Funny story: I actually missed the Bears 2001 season doing a year abroad in college. So I was really pumped to come back and be a part of what I was sure would be another playoff season, because I hadn’t seen one in seven years at that point. I was so charged up I bought tickets to the season finale in Champaign before the season, knowing I would be home for Christmas break and sure it would be for playoff positioning.
I gave the tickets to a friend before Thanksgiving. And missed being able to say I drove two hours each way to watch Henry Burris not even cross midfield against the eventual Super Bowl champs. What’s more unbelievable now, that Burris started for the Bears or that the Bucs won a Super Bowl?
