Led by a record-breaking performance by Eddie Jackson, the Bears won back-to-back games for the first time since 2015 with Sunday’s 17-3 win over the Panthers.

The Chicago Bears are back.

With a dominant 17-3 win over the Carolina Panthers, the Bears have now won back-to-back games and are 3-4, matching last season’s win total.

Today, the defense had to carry the team, as quarterback Mitchell Trubisky completed just 4 of 9 pass attempts and running backs Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen were stifled for most of the afternoon.

Fortunately, they didn’t need much offense in this one. The defense made it impossible for Panthers quarterback Cam Newton to get anything going all day long and provided all the touchdowns they would need to win.

More from Da Windy City

Great performances by the secondary and front seven got the job done for the Bears today, showing shades of past great Bears teams with the defensive dominance.

Bears fourth-round safety Eddie Jackson had an unbelievable game. Jackson’s first highlight play came on the opening drive of the game, where Jackson returned a Curtis Samuel fumble 75 yards for a touchdown to put the Bears up 7-0.

Jackson didn’t stop there. Jackson picked off a tipped Cam Newton pass early in the second quarter, returning it 75 yards (again) for the score. The return put the Bears up 14-0, more than enough for the win.

The contributions of Jackson have been huge. After the Bears were heavily criticized for not drafting a safety or cornerback in the first two rounds of last year’s draft, Jackson has proved that he’s just as good, if not better than the Bears options in the first couple of rounds.

Next: Defense carries day again in Bears win

The Bears continue to win behind their defense. Now at 3-4 and surging in the shaky NFC North, the Bears have a chance to do something that nobody expected them to coming into the season: contend for the playoffs. A lot has to go right, but the defense is there.

Stay tuned Bears fans, we have a fun second half coming up.
