Outside Linebackers

Starters: Leonard Floyd and Willie Young

Backups: Lamarr Houston and Sam Acho

PUP: Pernell McPhee

Probably the most interesting story surrounding the Chicago Bears’ outside linebackers is the health of Pernell McPhee. When on the field, McPhee is an absolute beast. He is a strong pass rusher and great run defender. Most importantly, he is a perfect complement to Leonard Floyd. However, injuries continue to be a major issue.

McPhee only played in nine games for the Bears last season and is currently on the PUP list with a right knee injury. While he could theoretically make it back for the start of the season, I would not be counting on that right now. Instead, it seems far more likely that McPhee will begin the season on the PUP and miss at least the first six weeks of the regular season.

Floyd is the Bears’ most talented defensive player and should really have a nice season as an edge rusher for this team. He is cemented at one starting outside linebacker position. With McPhee likely out at the start of the season, Willie Young is the best bet to pick up some starts.

Young is a quick and athletic edge rusher who can certainly create some pressure on the quarterback. A starting duo of Floyd and Young undoubtedly has a ton of pass rush upside.

Lamarr Houston has gotten back into the mix recently. He would be the first reserve off of the bench in this situation. Houston is a bigger and powerful player than Floyd and Young, and he would take on a large role.

Special teams ace Sam Acho is a rock solid player who can take some snaps at outside linebacker when needed. Ideally, the Bears wouldn’t need him to play much defense, but he is there as a dependable player if needed.
