Chicago Bears Free Agency: Cornerbacks
Sean Smith (45 tackles, 2 interceptions) — Kansas City Chiefs
Sean Smith was a big part of the Chiefs defensive surge that propelled them to a ten-game winning streak.
Smith is one of the top corners in the market. He combines good coverage with good run defense help. Pro Football Focus ranked him as the 19th-best coverage cornerback and the 26th-best run defending cornerback. He graded out as the 17th-best overall cornerback in the league.
The Chicago Bears defense was awful against the run in 2015, so any help they can get in that area would be beneficial.
Smith is 6-foot-3 and weighs 218 pounds. That is freakishly tall for a cornerback, and it helps him when he goes up against the tall receivers of today’s NFL.
Smith is also an aggressive defender, and that is always a plus. What is even better is that while he is aggressive, he is disciplined. He was called for only three penalties in 2015, and one of them was declined.
Smith could really thrive playing in the NFC North. There are some very good quarterbacks in the division, and the cornerbacks there need to stay with their receivers and hound them. That is what Smith can do, and it will make those quarterbacks think more. Covering as well as he does, it will cut the signal caller’s options, leading to either a thrown away ball, or a sack.
Smith would be a good pickup for the Chicago Bears. Ha can cover long enough for the pass rush to get to the quarterback, and he could give support to the run defense. The Bears would do well in picking him up.
