Whoa! The Chicago Bulls are reportedly talking to point guard Derrick Rose about a return to the Windy City.

Well, this is an interesting note. According to Sam Amick of USA TODAY Sports, the Chicago Bulls are talking to Derrick Rose’s agent B.J. Armstrong about a possible return. Amick also mentions the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers being in the mix, but a return to Chicago for Rose would be significant for many reasons. It also appears we will find out his decision soon.

The Bulls traded Rose to the New York Knicks last offseason. In exchange for Rose, guard Justin Holiday (who the Bulls just resigned in free agency) and a 2017 second round pick, the Bulls acquired center Robin Lopez and guards Jerian Grant and Jose Calderon. Honestly, this is arguably the best trade that the Chicago Bulls have made in recent years.

Lopez is a talented big man on a good contract and Grant has some solid backup point guard upside. Only spending one year with the Knicks last season, Rose was pretty awful.

Not a great idea

He is still a ball dominant player who does not fit in the flow of an offense well. Rose returning home would be fun for a short while, but if we are being honest, this does not make any sense.

More from Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls are clearly in a rebuild. They have three point guards on the roster (Kris Dunn, Cameron Payne and Grant) who all need work at the position. Zach LaVine and Antonio Blakeney are other young players who can play the point in stretches. Signing Rose would only take away from the development of these young players. The Bulls need to see what they have in their collection of guards, and signing Rose only hurts that.

Doing Rose a favor?

Honestly, I do not believe that the Bulls are actually interested in Derrick Rose. I think this is them doing him a favor as he tries to create leverage on the open market. Rose was once one of the most physically gifted players in the NBA. However, significant knee injuries have taken away his explosiveness. Rose has not aged well and is a decent backup point guard at best at this point in his career.

The Chicago Bulls signing Rose would certainly be an interesting development. He is arguably the franchise’s best player since the Michael Jordan era and has an important place in the history of the team. However, if the Bulls are serious about this rebuild, signing Rose does not make any sense. Let the young players play and see what you have on this roster.

Next: Remaining free agent targets for Bulls

While it would be interesting, the Chicago Bulls adding Derrick Rose to the mix would be a step in the wrong direction. If they are doing him a favor to add interest, no big deal. However, the Bulls actually signing Rose would be a major mistake.
