Chicago Bears: Mitch Trubisky is not the most interesting story of the summer

While many will focus on how Mitchell Trubisky progresses and how Mike Glennon handles the competition, the real story of the Chicago Bears’ summer should be tight end Adam Shaheen.

The Chicago Bears shocked the NFL world when they drafted Mitchell Trubisky with the second overall pick of the draft. They gave up a pretty penny to move up one spot and get him, so the thinking is that Mike Glennon, who signed a free agent contract just two months before, already had his time in Chicago limited.

When the Bears go to Bourbonnais this summer for training camp, many look forward to seeing how Glennon handles the competition, and how quickly Trubisky adjusts to the professional game. Everyone loves a good quarterback controversy, right?

Well, that may not be the biggest story for the Bears this summer.

More from Da Windy City

Peter King of Monday Morning Quarterback feels there is a different story for the Bears, and it will be the most intriguing story in the league. He feels Glennon will be the starter and Trubisky will sit. However, he feels the progression of the Bears’ second-round pick, tight end Adam Shaheen is more intriguing.

"I think one of the most interesting storylines of the summer camp season is going to be at Bears camp—and not necessarily how quickly Mitchell Trubisky can start a game. (I expect Mike Glennon to get a fair shot at keeping the quarterback job for the year.) But it’s the Division II tight end, Adam Shaheen. He’s 6’6″ and 277 pounds, and the book on him coming out of Ashland (Ohio) College was that he’s nimble."

Shaheen draws comparisons of the New England Patriots’ super tight end Rob Gronkowski. In fact, Shaheen has the nickname of “Baby Gronk.”

The selection of Shaheen was almost as much of a surprise as Trubisky. The Bears have Zach Miller as the primary tight end and signed Dion Sims to be the number two. The problem with those two, though, is their injury history. Miller hasn’t played an entire season in his career and Sims has concussion troubles.

Now there is a report that the Bears are willing to trade Miller. According to Michael Lombardi on The Ringer NFL Show, they told teams at the NFL Combine in March that they’d be willing to trade Miller if they selected a tight end in the draft. They did just that, and Miller appears to be expendable.

Yes, Miller has been productive. He is 33 years old, however, and his injury history won’t get better. If Shaheen can perform well, we may very well say goodbye to Miller. The Bears could ship Miller away for a middle or late-round pick. Of course, if no one bites, the team could just cut Miller and take a $500,000 dead money hit.

I agree with King, Shaheen is very intriguing. If he indeed picks it up and handles the pro game, the Chicago Bears have themselves an incredible target to help whoever is the quarterback.
