The Chicago Cubs have officially set their Opening Day 25-man roster ahead of their season-opening game against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday night.

The Chicago Cubs have set their Opening Day 25-man roster.

Ahead of the Cubs’ roster moves on Wednesday, the expectation was that the Cubs were choosing between infielder Tommy La Stella and outfielder Matt Szczur for the final roster spot.

The belief was that the Cubs were set to choose La Stella over Szczur. Over the course of the past week, the Cubs had been shopping Szczur and there was growing expectation that the outfielder would be traded. However, with veteran reliever Brian Duensing landing on the disabled list to start the season, both Szczur and La Stella made the 25-man roster to open the season.

On paper, the Cubs’ roster actually may be better than the roster they had when they opened the 2016 regular-season.

It will be interesting to see how long Szczur stays with the Major League team. Szczur is out of minor league options meaning he would need to pass through waivers in the event that the Cubs wanted to send him down. La Stella has minor league options remaining and he has assured the Cubs’ front office that he would accept a minor league assignment.
